NASA odbacuje ideju o vanzemaljskom porijeklu
NASA i vodeći stručnjaci smatraju da objekat 3I/ATLAS vrlo vjerovatno nije poslat od strane vanzemaljske civilizacije, već da je komet. Debata oko 3I/ATLAS i dalje privlači pažnju zbog tvrdnji astrofizičara Avi Loeba, koji je predložio mogućnost da je 3I/ATLAS "sent towards the inner solar system by design" i da može otpuštati "mini-probes" za istraživanje.
Međutim, Tom Statler, glavni NASA naučnik za male objekte Sunčevog sistema, jasno je istakao: "It looks like a comet," i dodao: "It does comet things. It very, very strongly resembles, in just about every way, the comets that we know." Statler je zaključio: "It's a comet." Ipak, naglasio je da 3I/ATLAS posjeduje "some interesting properties that are a little bit different from our solar system comets."
Objašnjenje za neobična ponašanja može biti u načinu na koji kometi reaguju na Sunčevu radijaciju: "So even in our solar system, comets can have a history of suddenly brightening if there’s, say, a particular pocket of ice that sublimates quickly and drives off a large amount of dust," rekao je Statler. Stručnjaci podsjećaju da je 3I/ATLAS samo treći međuzvjezdani posjetilac koji smo otkrili, te da će najvjerovatnije biti još takvih objekata koji će otkriti sastav drugih sistema.
Avi Loeb je ipak priznao: "The simplest hypothesis is that 3I/ATLAS is a comet and we are missing the spectral features of its gaseous coma because of its large distance from Earth." Loeb također apeluje da naučnici ostanu otvorenog uma: "Whereas the dogmatist will shove anomalous data under the carpet of traditional thinking, an open-minded scientist will be thrilled to learn something new with an underlying sense of humility." I dodaje: "Not only is nature more imaginative than we are, but it also does not care whether we figure it out."
